Sod is perishable. It has to go down within a day of delivery in warm weather, so ordering short and waiting for a second load is worse than ordering slightly over.
How this is calculated
- Net area = lawn area minus beds, paths and anything else not getting sod.
- Add 5 to 10 percent for cuts. Curved edges and circular beds push that toward the upper end.
- A pallet typically holds 450 to 500 square feet, though this varies by supplier and by whether the sod is cut as slabs or rolls.

How soon must sod be laid after delivery?
Within 24 hours in warm weather, sooner above 30°C. Stacked sod heats up in the middle of the pallet and starts to yellow.
How much soil preparation does sod need?
Four to six inches of loosened, levelled topsoil. Sod laid on compacted subgrade roots poorly and dies back in the first dry spell.
