Square footage is the starting point for flooring, paint, sod and almost every material estimate. Irregular rooms are handled by splitting them into rectangles and adding the results, which is what the area count is for.
How this is calculated
- Rectangle: length × width. Circle: π × radius², where the radius is half the diameter you enter.
- Triangle: half the base × the perpendicular height, not the sloped side.
- For an L-shaped room, measure it as two rectangles and add them.

How do I measure an irregular room?
Split it into rectangles, measure each, and add the results. Bay windows and alcoves count as separate rectangles.
Is square footage measured to the wall or the finish?
For material estimates, measure to the finished wall face. Real estate listings often use exterior dimensions, which is why a listed figure is usually larger than what you can floor.
