Every pool chemical is dosed per volume, so getting the gallons right is the difference between balanced water and an expensive correction. A sloped floor is handled by using the average of the shallow and deep ends.
How this is calculated
- Surface area depends on shape: length × width for a rectangle, πr² for a round pool, πab for an oval.
- Average depth = (shallow + deep) ÷ 2. This is accurate for a constant slope; a pool with a sharp drop-off needs to be split into two sections and added.
- Volume in cubic feet × 7.48 gives US gallons.

How accurate is the average depth method?
Good for a constant slope. If your pool has a flat shallow section and then a sudden drop, calculate each part separately and add them.
What is pool turnover?
The time for the pump to circulate the entire volume once. Most residential pools aim for a full turnover every 8 to 10 hours.
