Grout quantity has little to do with area and everything to do with total joint length. The same hundred square feet needs about eight times more grout in mosaic than in large format tile, which is why a single coverage figure on a bag is useless.

How this is calculated

  1. The industry formula is (length + width) ÷ (length × width), multiplied by tile thickness, joint width and a constant of 10.9, giving pounds per square foot.
  2. Small tiles have far more joint per square foot than large ones, so coverage falls sharply as tile size drops.
  3. Thicker tile means deeper joints and more grout, which is why the tile thickness matters as much as the face size.

Frequently asked questions

Why does mosaic use so much more grout?

Because grout fills joints, and small tiles have enormously more joint length per square foot. A 1 inch mosaic has twelve times the joint length of a 12 inch tile over the same area.

Sanded or unsanded?

Sanded for joints an eighth of an inch or wider. Unsanded for narrower joints and for polished stone that sand would scratch.
