Grout quantity is not proportional to area alone. Small tiles with wide joints can use several times the grout of large format tiles over the same floor, because what matters is total joint volume.
How this is calculated
- The industry formula uses (tile length + tile width) ÷ (length × width), multiplied by tile thickness, joint width and a constant of 10.9 to give pounds per square foot.
- Multiply by the tiled area and add 10% for mixing losses and the grout left in the bucket.
- Joints of an eighth of an inch or wider need sanded grout; anything narrower uses unsanded.
Frequently asked questions
Sanded or unsanded grout?
Sanded for joints an eighth of an inch or wider. Unsanded for narrower joints, and for polished stone that sand would scratch.
Why does mosaic tile use so much grout?
Because grout volume follows total joint length, and small tiles have enormously more joint per square foot than large ones.
