Carpet waste is driven by roll width, not by cutting skill. Rolls come 12 feet wide, so a 13 foot room needs a second strip and throws away most of it. Rotating the layout or accepting a seam often saves more than any discount you can negotiate.

How this is calculated

  1. Strips = room width ÷ roll width, rounded up. Each strip runs the full room length.
  2. Carpet is sold by the square yard: total square feet ÷ 9.
  3. The waste figure shows how much of what you buy ends up as offcut. If it is high, try measuring with length and width swapped.

Frequently asked questions

Why is carpet sold by the square yard?

Convention from the loom width. One square yard is nine square feet, so divide your square footage by nine.

Can I avoid a seam in a room wider than 12 feet?

Only with a wider roll, which limits your choice of styles. For most rooms a seam placed away from the main traffic path and running toward the window is barely visible.
