Wallpaper estimates go wrong because of the pattern repeat. Every strip has to be cut at a multiple of the repeat so the design lines up, which means an eight foot wall can need a nine foot strip and waste the difference on every drop.
How this is calculated
- Strips needed = room perimeter ÷ roll width. Openings are ignored deliberately: you still hang a full strip above a door.
- Cut length = wall height rounded up to the next whole pattern repeat.
- Usable strips per roll = roll length ÷ cut length, rounded down. The remainder is too short to use.
Frequently asked questions
Why does pattern repeat waste so much?
Each drop must start at the same point in the design. With an 18 inch repeat and an 8 foot wall you cut 9 feet and discard a foot on every single strip.
Should I buy all rolls at once?
Yes, from the same batch number. Colour varies between print runs and the difference is obvious on a finished wall.
