Veneer is sold two ways: flats by the square foot and corners by the linear foot. Corners are far more expensive, and each linear foot of corner replaces about half a square foot of flat, so measuring them separately matters.
How this is calculated
- Gross area = length × height, minus openings.
- Subtract half a square foot of flats for every linear foot of outside corner, since the corner unit wraps and covers both faces.
- One 80 lb bag of mortar sets roughly 25 square feet of veneer, plus more for the scratch coat over lath.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a scratch coat?
Over sheathing or framing, yes: lath plus a scratch coat. Over clean concrete or block, veneer can often be set directly.
How much extra should I order?
Ten percent. Veneer is laid to a pattern and the offcuts from fitting around openings are rarely reusable.
