A shed is a small building with all the same parts as a large one, which is why the cost per square foot runs higher than people expect. The foundation choice makes the biggest single difference: a concrete slab typically doubles the base cost against a gravel pad.

How this is calculated

  1. Materials are priced from our material price tracking, updated monthly from the federal index.
  2. Roof area assumes a 6/12 pitch, which is 11.8% more surface than the floor footprint.
  3. A gravel pad suits most sheds on well-drained ground. A slab is worth it for heavy equipment or anything permanent.
  4. Material only: no permits, no labour, no delivery, no doors or windows beyond basic framing.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a permit for a shed?

Many jurisdictions exempt sheds under 100 or 120 square feet, but setback rules usually still apply. Check locally before you pour anything.

Gravel pad or concrete slab?

Gravel drains better, costs roughly half, and suits most storage sheds. Choose a slab if you will park machinery, run a workshop, or want the shed to outlast you.
