Epoxy fails at the preparation stage, not the coating stage. Coverage figures on the kit assume a profiled, dry slab; on smooth sealed concrete the epoxy will cover the stated area and then peel off in sheets within a year.

How this is calculated

  1. Area × number of coats, divided by the kit coverage. Add 10% for the edges and the material left in the tray.
  2. Bare concrete needs a primer coat and absorbs noticeably more than the stated rate on the first pass.
  3. Prepare by diamond grinding or acid etching. A slab that passes the water drop test (water beads instead of soaking in) is sealed and must be ground.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my slab needs grinding?

Pour a little water on it. If it beads up rather than darkening the concrete, the surface is sealed and epoxy will not bond. Grind it.

Can I epoxy over a slab with moisture?

No. Tape a square of plastic to the floor overnight: condensation underneath means vapour drive, and epoxy will blister. You need a moisture-tolerant primer or a different system.
