Countertops are quoted per square foot but measured in linear feet along the cabinets. A standard run is 25.5 inches deep, which includes the inch of overhang past the cabinet face.

How this is calculated

  1. Counter area = linear feet × depth ÷ 12. Standard depth is 25 to 25.5 inches including overhang.
  2. Backsplash is priced as additional square footage in the same material. Four inches is the standard height.
  3. Fabricators usually charge a minimum and bill edge profiles, cutouts for sinks and cooktops, and seams separately.

Frequently asked questions

How deep is a standard countertop?

Twenty-five to twenty-five and a half inches, which is a 24 inch cabinet plus about an inch and a half of overhang.

What is not in this estimate?

Fabrication, sink and cooktop cutouts, edge profile upgrades, seams, templating, delivery and installation. On stone, these can rival the material cost.
