A curb is a long, thin pour, which makes it deceptively hungry: the volume per foot is small but the runs are long, and forms leak more than slabs do.
How this is calculated
- Volume = length × width × height, converting inches to feet.
- Divide by 27 for cubic yards. Most residential curb runs come in under a yard, so bagged mix is often the practical choice.
- Use 10% waste minimum. Slip-formed and hand-formed curbs both lose material at the ends and at every joint.

Six inches wide by eight inches tall is typical for garden edging. Street curbs are larger and governed by municipal standards.
Do curbs need reinforcement?
A continuous #3 or #4 bar along the run helps control cracking on anything longer than about 20 feet.
